Key deals highlight of 45th anniversary of China-Mí»sia ties
KUALA LUMPUR: The signing of several key agreements between China and Malaysia is the highlight of the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries this year.
China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian said the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing in April for the second Belt and Road initiative summit showed Malaysia’s earnest participation in the project.
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who also visited China in August 2018 just months after becoming the seventh prime minister, met top leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jin-ping, Premier Li Keqiang and Chair-man of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Li Zianshu on the sidelines.
“Following that, Dr Mahathir and Li witnessed the signing of several key agreements with regards to the palm oil trade, East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and Bandar Malaysia.
“This latest development can be considered as the centrepiece for the 45th anniversary of our diplomatic ties this year,” said Bai during the celebration here on Monday night.
This same spirit of cooperation, he added, could be seen in a special micro-movie called the Gift of Time produced by the Chinese embassy to commemorate the anniversary. “We want to show to people around the world how the people of Malaysia and China will always strive forward together – shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, and heart to heart – despite the vicissitudes of both the domestic and international arena over the last 45 years,” he said before the movie was screened to the audience.
Also present at the event were Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin and other guests.
Bai also reiterated the Chinese government’s commitments to further promote its flourishing relations with Malaysia and to achieve more common prosperity through mutually beneficial cooperation.
“I believe Malaysia and China will always be good neighbours, trustworthy brothers and sincere friends in the years to come,” he said.
